I was able to obtain a copy of this book, Aguililla Un Pueblo Migrante by Israel Contreras Cervantes, which details the history of my dad’s hometown of Aguililla and the incredible migration of so many families from Aguililla, Michoacán to Redwood City, California. I learned of this book a few weeks ago during my ongoing ancestral research and just had to get a copy. Luckily, Israel sent me a special edition right away and the book is absolutely stunning. I have yet to visit Aguililla, but my dad has shared great memories of his childhood there before immigrating to California with his family at eight years old in 1978. I spent hours with him on FaceTime today going through every page of this 400 page book and it was so nostalgic and sentimental. Not only did I learn so much more about Aguililla, but there was also a lot of information about Redwood City, which brought me back to my time spent there throughout my childhood as well. There is plenty of information to read through, and I’m excited to learn more about my Purépecha heritage, the extraordinary, sustained connection between the 2 towns, and our legacy as mariposas migrantes
